Dehradun has been shortlisted in the Smart Cities challenge by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The Dehradun Municipal Corporation hereby invites citizens to come forward and share their opinions about the issues and bottlenecks plaguing the city and suggest their vision along with innovative, sustainable and SMART solutions with regard to the following Area-Based Strategies:

• Retrofitting (Planning and improvement of infrastructure in an existing built-up area).
• Redevelopment (Replacement of existing built-up area and co-creation of new layout with enhanced infrastructure).
• Greenfield Development (planning and development in new areas)

Dehradun Municipal Corporation is looking forward to the valuable suggestions and continued support of all Dehradun citizens in this endeavor.

This is when the word Dehra was linked to Dun, and thus the city was named Dehradun. In Skanda Purana, Dun is mentioned as a part of the region called Kedarkhand, the abode of Shiva. In ancient India during the Mahabharata epic era, Dronacharya the great teacher of Kauravas and Pandavas, lived here hence the name, "Dronanagari" (lit. city of Drona).[11][12] Some historians believe that the word Dehra can be regarded as a term for camping.[
